Commonly Overlooked Air Conditioning Problems

Make sure the AC unit is turned on and set to cool.

An HVAC unit is an extensive system that works hard year-round to keep a house comfortable during the coolest and warmest months. These units, however, come with some potential problems that must be monitored. While some issues may require a professional to fix, identifying the problem independently saves time and restores cool air faster. Consider the following common problems to identify and resolve them efficiently.

Check the setting

Make sure the AC unit is turned on and set to cool. Check the temperature it's set on; the system only turns on if the set temperature is cooler than the room temperature. If the power has recently gone out, check the breaker to ensure everything is turned on correctly. As an added precaution, try resetting everything before calling a professional.

Examine the outside

If everything appears alright on the inside of the unit, check outside. The outside unit may appear to be simple, but it has some crucial working parts. Ensure the pump works and check if the coils are damaged or dirty. If cleaning is the issue, hose down the unit and try again.

Check for blocked vents

Another common, quickly resolved problem is furniture blocking a vent. Check that all vents are clear of external blockages. Additionally, the house could have trouble cooling if windows are open or a humidifier is on. Sometimes, it can be challenging. More severe problems include bad valves, duct leaks, low charges, or poor insulation. The unit may also need a tune-up to help it return to solid condition.

Change the filters

One of the most common problems with air conditioning units that’s often overlooked are clogged vents and dirty filters. While some debris may find its way down into the air system through wind, some may be pushed into vents by accident by small children or pets.

Clogged vents

Be aware of what kinds of items and debris can clog air vents. The usual allergens, dust, hair, and, in some cases, mold, are frequently blown into vents and ducts simply through the passage of air, picking up debris and carrying it back. Toys, too, can accidentally be dropped down a duct or a vent by small children or pets. Additionally, rodents tend to seek out the cooler climate in the summer and the warmer climate in the winter. Invest in repellent to prevent them from staking out the air system as a new home and ensure everything is sealed correctly.

Whether it's from construction on the home or simply a windy day, debris may find its way into the air system. To ensure the air conditioning system isn't suffering, clean the vents regularly and contact a professional about a routine check-up for the system.
