Troubleshooting Your HVAC Thermostat

If a homeowner discovers HVAC problems, there are some easy ways to figure out if it may be the thermostat. Although the thermostat isn’t typically the first issue that comes to mind, it’s sensible that this little ‘brain box’ can acquire problems or wear out. Here are a few signs the thermostat needs to be repaired or replaced:

Here are some of the typical symptoms of thermostat failure

  • The display isn’t reading or is blank

  • The heater or a/c won’t run

  • The heater or a/c runs continuously

  • The temperature setting and the room temperature are not the same

Some options that might revive a thermostat:

Examine the breaker box to identify if there is a tripped breaker. If there is, turn it on. Ensure it’s set to the season. If the a/c runs in the winter or heat is on in the summer, it will not work. Attempt to change the temperature by five degrees--lower in winter, higher in summer-- to determine if it will turn on. Listen for a mechanized click and the blower coming on. During the summer, you can check the filter at the return vent to see if it’s concave from the force of the air. Resupply it with fresh batteries if it’s electronic. This is a frequent fix for blank screens. If it’s mechanical, turn the breaker off at the circuit breaker box and remove the cover from the thermostat. Using a small brush, whisk away the dust that can cause thermostat issues.

The wires

In the interim of the cover being off, check the wires. Closely examine each one to determine if it is still firmly connected to the mounting screw. Tighten them as required. Remember to turn the breaker back on as soon as the thermostat cover is back in place.

Is it level?

When the thermostat isn’t level, it can’t function properly. Utilize a level to ensure it’s still straight, particularly if it has been pushed askew somehow, such as being nudged by a piece of furniture.

Scheduling an HVAC Expert

When you’ve attempted all of the other actions, and nothing has worked, schedule an HVAC expert to troubleshoot the thermostat. Occasionally,  the thermostat can be fixed. Unfortunately, home thermostats usually only last about ten years. Fortunately, Smart thermostats have blossomed in popularity because of the control, energy efficiency, and ease of use they provide. So, even if your thermostat is broken, the possible savings gained by replacing it with a new one is so huge that it will pay for itself and the service call in only a couple of months.

Supposing your thermostat seems to have problems, but you don’t feel confident troubleshooting it yourself, that’s understandable. We’re happy to come out and diagnose the issue, no matter if you’ve tried the steps listed above or not. DIY, while worthwhile, isn’t for everyone.
